Preamble

BeezNest Belgium SRL, as the steward of the Chamilo Learning Management System (LMS) from 2026-01-01, hereby affirms its unwavering commitment to the project's foundational principles. Established in 2005 as a defender of Free Software and the GNU General Public License (GPL), BeezNest assumes control of the Chamilo project, its EU trademark, and its global network of providers with the solemn pledge to perpetuate Chamilo as a beacon of open, accessible education. This Carta Magna serves as our enduring charter, binding BeezNest to these ideals for the lifetime of the company, ensuring Chamilo remains a tool for empowering educators and learners worldwide without barriers of cost or control.

Core Commitments

  1. Perpetual Free Software Status: BeezNest vows to maintain Chamilo under the GNU/GPL or compatible license indefinitely, safeguarding its status as Free Software. No core components shall ever be relicensed as proprietary, preserving the freedom to use, study, modify, and distribute for all.
  2. Advancement of Educational Mission: BeezNest will relentlessly develop and enhance Chamilo to broaden access to high-quality education globally, aligning with the project's mission to democratize learning through innovative, inclusive features that support diverse pedagogical needs.
  3. Open Integration of Contributions: External contributions from the community—code, documentation, translations, and ideas—compatible with Chamilo's license, will be actively reviewed, integrated, and credited, fostering a collaborative ecosystem where every voice strengthens Chamilo.
  4. Regular Public Releases: BeezNest commits to issuing frequent, stable versions of Chamilo, made freely available for download and deployment, with comprehensive release notes, changelogs, and migration guides to ensure seamless adoption.
  5. Unwavering Transparency: Building on Chamilo's legacy, BeezNest will maintain openness by publishing development roadmaps, source code repositories, and regular community updates, inviting scrutiny and participation.
  6. Non-Interference with Core Functionality: While BeezNest may innovate proprietary extensions or services to meet enterprise demands—as is common in sustainable open source models—these shall never diminish, remove, or encumber existing free features. The core Chamilo software will evolve independently, continually improved for universal benefit.
  7. Sustainability and Stewardship: BeezNest will nurture the network of Chamilo providers, offering support, certification, and collaboration opportunities to expand the ecosystem while prioritizing the project's long-term viability through ethical commercial practices.
  8. Community Governance Input: BeezNest will establish advisory mechanisms, such as periodic community forums and contributor summits, to incorporate feedback, ensuring decisions reflect collective wisdom without compromising agility.
  9. Ethical Innovation: All enhancements will prioritize user privacy and accessibility, with a focus on reducing digital divides in education, guided by the Free Software ethos and global best practices.
  10. Legacy and Succession: Should BeezNest dissolve or transfer stewardship, this Carta Magna shall bind successors, with provisions for community-nominated trustees to enforce these terms, securing Chamilo's freedom in perpetuity.

Affirmation

This Carta Magna is not merely a declaration but a covenant etched into BeezNest's corporate DNA. To the Chamilo community—developers, educators, institutions, and learners—we extend our deepest gratitude and assurance: Chamilo's open heart beats stronger under our care. Together, we will illuminate paths to knowledge for the foreseeable future.
