Moodle to Chamilo LMS Migration
a smooth, controlled move
Are you currently using Moodle and thinking about moving to Chamilo LMS? You are not alone. BeezNest regularly hears from organizations that want to join Chamilo and, quite rightly, ask the same questions: what will happen to our courses, our users, our history? How much effort will it take from our teams?
As the Chamilo LMS publisher, we have built a structured approach and developed dedicated tools to support these migrations. Our goal is simple: to let you change platforms with peace of mind, without losing sight of what matters to you, your learners and your training programs.
An open platform
Chamilo LMS already makes these migrations easier
Chamilo LMS was designed as an open platform, and that openness makes it easier to move from other solutions. Its source code is public and available to everyone on GitHub, a guarantee of transparency about what the platform does.
In practice, Chamilo LMS can read a Moodle course backup from the course maintenance tool. Depending on the Chamilo version in use, part of the content, such as documents, pages, links, forums, assignments or glossaries, can be converted this way. This import remains a technical step, which we prepare and check with you.
Chamilo LMS also accepts SCORM packages and exercise questions in QTI2, Aiken or Excel format.
This native import is a good starting point, but it does not cover everything. Users, grades and tracking history are transferred separately, as part of a supported project (for example through a CSV import, your LDAP directory or single sign-on for accounts). And because results vary depending on the content and the Chamilo version, we always test on a trial course first. This is exactly where our method and our tools come in.
Why Chamilo
Why move from Moodle to Chamilo LMS?
Every organization has its own reasons for looking for a Moodle alternative. The ones we hear most often come down to a few shared expectations.
A platform designed for simplicity
Chamilo LMS puts ease of use first, for learners as well as for trainers and administrators. Creating a course, tracking a group's progress or organizing a session all happen in an interface your teams get to grips with quickly.
A European solution, with no lock-in
BeezNest, the Chamilo LMS publisher, is based in Belgium. Development, support and hosting (in France or Belgium) stay in Europe. No proprietary edition: your data remain yours and available at all times.
Recognized as a Digital Public Good by the Digital Public Goods Alliance.
A publisher by your side
BeezNest is the Chamilo LMS publisher. The teams supporting you know the platform inside out. Hosting, support, training, custom development: you have a single point of contact for your entire project.

Comparing platforms?
Have you seen Chamilo LMS New Generation yet?
In 2026, BeezNest unveiled the new generation of Chamilo LMS: a modernized interface, a platform that remains easy to use and optional artificial intelligence tools for your trainers (test and learning path generation, grading assistance, AI tutor), with the AI provider of your choice. Before planning your migration, take the time to discover it.

A migration that is prepared, tested and supported
Every migration is different. Here is how we usually work, adapting each step to your context.
Step 1
A first conversation
We take the time to understand your situation: your current platform, how you use it, your audiences, your constraints and what you expect from Chamilo LMS.
Step 2
Feasibility analysis with a project manager
A BeezNest project manager reviews your Moodle platform and assesses what can be transferred, how, and with what level of effort. This gives you a clear picture before you commit.
Step 3
Content inventory
Courses, resources, users, enrollments, history: together we list what needs to be migrated, what can be archived and what deserves to be rethought.
Step 4
The migration plan
Together, we draw up a migration plan: scope, order of operations, everyone's roles and validation checkpoints.
Step 5
The test migration
Before any switchover, a test migration is carried out on a dedicated environment. Your teams can check the content and report any adjustments needed.
Step 6
Validation
Corrections are made and then validated with you. Nothing is switched over until you are happy with the result.
Step 7
The switchover
The final migration is scheduled at the best time for your learners and trainers, to keep disruption for your users to a minimum.
Step 8
Support and training for your teams
After the switchover, we stay by your side: training for administrators and trainers, technical support and advice to get the most out of Chamilo LMS.
Hosting
Where should you host your new platform?
The migration works either way: we install Chamilo LMS on your own servers, and you keep control of your infrastructure, or we host it for you.
Option 1
On your servers
We install Chamilo LMS on your infrastructure, carry out the migration and configuration there, and help your technical teams get to grips with the platform.
Option 2
Most popularChamilo PRO, hosted by BeezNest
We host your platform in France or Belgium and take care of updates and backups. To get you started, we train a team of up to 10 people. Unlimited, training-oriented technical support then takes over, in a question-and-answer format, and a project manager is there to support you. Everything is in place to make adopting your new platform easier.
Chamilo LMS is often chosen for its focus on simplification and its work on usability. We do not overload the platform with plugins or features: it evolves to meet every training need while remaining simple and intuitive.
Our tools
Tools developed specifically for these migrations
Project after project, BeezNest has developed tools designed specifically for these migrations. They allow us to transfer your data more reliably and in a more structured way than case-by-case manual work, and to spend more time on what gives your project its value: the quality of your training.
Whatever the native Chamilo LMS import does not cover is handled by our tools or reworked with you, and every result is checked during the test migration.
Your training modules in SCORM format, a standard supported by both Chamilo LMS and Moodle, can be imported into Chamilo LMS as packages; we check them one by one on a trial course.
Beyond Moodle
Platform migrations, our specialty
While many of our clients come from Moodle, our expertise does not stop there. Migrations between learning platforms have become a BeezNest specialty.
From another LMS to Chamilo LMS
Using another learning platform, open source or proprietary? The approach stays the same: feasibility analysis, inventory, migration plan, testing and support.
From an in-house platform
Some organizations have built their own training tool over the years. When it becomes hard to maintain or develop further, we work with you to see how your data can be transferred to Chamilo LMS.
From an older version of Chamilo
Upgrading to a more recent version of Chamilo LMS, such as Chamilo New Generation, also relies on a prepared and tested approach.
What you keep
What you keep, and how we support you
The question everyone asks: what will I find in Chamilo LMS? The answer depends on your current platform, how your content was created and your priorities. That is precisely the role of the feasibility analysis: to tell you clearly, before starting, what can be transferred, what will need adapting and what may be worth rethinking.
Throughout the project, you stay in control: you validate each step, you test before the switchover and you are supported after go-live, with BeezNest hosting, technical support and training if you wish.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can all our Moodle data be transferred to Chamilo LMS?
It depends on your platform, your content and the Chamilo version chosen. Chamilo LMS can take over part of your Moodle course content. Users, grades and tracking history are transferred separately, as part of a supported project, and each transfer is first tested on a trial course. The feasibility analysis carried out by our project manager tells you what can be transferred automatically, what will be handled by our tools and what will need adapting.
Will our learners have to interrupt their training?
Whether Chamilo LMS is installed on your servers or hosted by BeezNest, we plan the switchover with you to minimize the impact on your learners and trainers. The test migration lets you check the result before go-live.
How long does a migration take?
Every project is different: the duration depends on the volume of content, the complexity of your platform and your constraints. The migration plan drawn up with you sets a realistic timeline.
We don't use Moodle: can you help us?
Yes. Migrations between platforms are a BeezNest specialty, whether you are coming from another LMS or from an in-house tool. Tell us about your situation and we will assess feasibility with you.
Who will host our new Chamilo LMS platform?
The choice is yours. We can install Chamilo LMS on your own servers, and you keep control of your infrastructure, or host it for you with Chamilo PRO, in France or Belgium: updates, backups, training for your team, unlimited technical support and a dedicated project manager. We discuss this when analyzing your project.
Do my data and my platform really belong to me?
Yes. Chamilo LMS is released under the GNU GPL v3 license: your content and your data remain yours and available at all times. You stay in control of your platform, with no technical or contractual lock-in.
