Adobe Flash and V4L2 webcams

Many new videoconference systems nowadays are Flash-based. Of course, the main input for them is some sort of video device (e.g. a webcam). Under Linux, the framework responsible for this is Video4Linux (V4L), of which version 2 (aka V4L2) is current. That means that most recent webcams drivers are supported only by V4L2. Alas, some proprietary editors (of which Skype and Adobe with Flash) still only support V4L1.

HOWTO Install Sun's JAVA on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04)

After Ubuntu's decision to default to OpenJDK for 10.04 (which is a good decision, IMHO), Sun's (but is it still Sun, or Oracle?) JAVA somewhat "disappeared" from Ubuntu (multiverse). That being said, some people may still need features only available in Sun's JRE/JDK, which might not yet have been Freed. Actually, Ubuntu is still shipping it, but in its "partner" section.

Pre-translating a large rich-text document

This one is tricky... (and not so practical just yet) So let's say you have a 120 pages document, written using MS-Word, and which is understood pretty well by OpenOffice.org Writer (v2). Now let's say your document is a technical document and, as such, it is half-full of screenshots taken from a software interface (in this case Dokeos) directly into the language of the document. See what I mean? Now, let's say this document is in French and you want to translate it to English (or Spanish, the problem is exactly the same).

Capture DV from FW/raw1394 - Ubuntu 8.10

Due to a few missing bits in the DOKUDA video-editing team, I had to turn my MacBookPro on Ubuntu 8.10 into a FireWire (ieee1394) video recording device, through the reading of the DV tapes in a Panasonic PV-GS9 video recording camera. Surprisingly, this did not work out of the box. It should have worked with a simple "dvgrab", but when connecting the camera to the FW port, it seemed to remain undetected. After a few trials (including a reboot), I realized the FireWire module (raw1394) should be loaded into the operating system.

Xorg, Ubuntu 8.10 and the resolution change bug

Most of you playing with a laptop or a PC with a beamer will have noticed that when you change the resolution of your screen, applying the changes suddendly blocks your screen in a high frequency that prevents you from changing back to normal. Didier Misson (one of my fellow BxLUGers) wrote an article about that desktop resolution bug (in French) and how to fix it changing the /home/[user]/.config/monitors.xml file. Might help...
