AI Tutor, Exercise Generator, Learning Path Generator, AI Grading, glossary generation, illustrative images and videos: Chamilo 2.x integrates seven AI tools directly into courses. Discover how they work and how to configure them.
In this article
1. Overview of AI tools & prerequisites
Chamilo 2.x includes seven AI-powered pedagogical tools. Together, they cover the three most time-consuming aspects of instructional design: content creation (Exercise Generator, Learning Path Generator, image, video and glossary term generation), learner support (AI Tutor) and assessment (AI Grading).
Prerequisites: AI tools are disabled by default. An administrator must configure at least one AI provider and enable AI assistants globally. The following tools can be enabled per course by the trainer: AI Tutor, Exercise Generator, Learning Path Generator. See the AI configuration guide.
All AI-generated content is always presented as an editable suggestion; the trainer reviews and validates before publishing.
2. AI Tutor: learner support 24/7
The AI Tutor is a contextual chatbot embedded in the course interface. Learners can ask course-related questions, request explanations and receive guided hints at any time, without waiting for the trainer.
Key behaviours
- Course-contextual only: the AI Tutor is only available within the course
- Automatically disabled during exams: the chat panel is hidden during exercises
- Individual conversations: each learner has their own private conversation history
- AI disclosure: all responses include a notice indicating that the content is AI-generated
Pedagogical tip: set clear expectations at the start of the course about when to use the AI Tutor (exploring concepts, revising) versus when to contact the trainer directly (grading questions, practical exercises).
3. Exercise Generator: exercises and grading on demand
The Exercise Generator appears within the exercise creation workflow. It automatically generates MCQs and exercises from a topic or existing content. For open-ended questions, the AI grades learner responses on demand rather than generating them.
How to use it
- Open the exercise builder (Course → Exercises → New exercise)
- Click the Generate with AI button
- Enter a topic description or select existing content
- Choose the question type (MCQ, true/false, fill-in-the-blank) and quantity
- Review the generated questions: edit, delete or regenerate individually
- Publish the exercise when satisfied
4. Learning Path Generator: learning paths in one click
The Learning Path Generator creates complete learning paths from a list of objectives. The generator produces a draft with named steps and a suggested sequence. Each element is editable before publishing: steps can be renamed, reordered, completed or deleted.
SCORM compatibility: AI-generated learning paths and manually imported SCORM content can coexist within the same course.
5. AI Grading: feedback on open assignments
AI Grading assists trainers in evaluating open-ended assignments. The AI analyses the submitted work and generates a suggested grade and written feedback. The trainer can accept, modify or reject the AI evaluation. The trainer always makes the final decision.
When AI Grading delivers the most value
- Large groups with many written assignments to grade
- Providing initial feedback drafts that trainers refine
- Reducing turnaround time on assignment feedback
6. Glossary, image & video generation
Three additional AI tools are available directly from the document authoring interface:
Glossary term generator
Automatically suggests terms and definitions from course content, helping trainers build a reference vocabulary without manual effort.
Illustrative image generator
Generates illustrative images directly from the document editor without leaving the authoring interface.
Illustrative video generator
Generates short illustrative videos from the document editor to enrich course content with visual explanations.
7. Supported AI providers & configuration
Chamilo 2.x supports five AI providers for text tasks, and OpenAI for image generation:
| Provider | Text generation | Image generation |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | Yes | Yes |
| Google Gemini | Yes | No |
| Mistral | Yes | No |
| DeepSeek | Yes | No |
| Grok | Yes | No |
| Claude (Anthropic) | Yes | No |
Multiple providers can be configured simultaneously. It is also possible to configure your own sovereign implementation of a compatible model as a provider endpoint. Administrators can set usage limits to control API costs.
Two clarifications from the BeezNest technical team:
Update 1 — 24 July 2026
AI providers: table updated
Support for Claude (Anthropic) will be added as an AI provider in Chamilo 2.1
Update 2 — 24 July 2026
Translation in the online editor
Chamilo also integrates an automatic content translation feature directly from the document editor. This feature sits at the boundary between pedagogical tooling and internationalisation, allowing trainers to produce translated versions of their content without leaving the authoring interface.
