Its main features for course production include:

  • Creating and/or importing educational content.
  • Building courses with a variety of collaborative tools, learning paths, and management options.
  • Providing full tracking of learners and their activities on the platform.
  • Issuing training certificates and/or digital skill badges upon completion.

Digital badges and skills

This article focuses on digital skill badges — digital elements in the form of “badges” that certify the acquisition of abilities, knowledge, or competencies. For more information on “open badges,” visit: https://openbadges.info/.

What are digital badges used for?

Digital badges contain verifiable information such as:

  • Badge description
  • Badge recipient
  • Issuing organization
  • Awarding criteria
  • Supporting evidence
  • Issuance date
  • Authentication details…

Purpose of digital skill badges

Learners can showcase their achievements through a gallery of badges stored in a “Backpack” — an online display that highlights their skills, project involvement, and research topics, and allows them to share these publicly.

Chamilo enhances learner profiles with a “Skills” section that contains badges earned through Chamilo training courses and exported to the learner’s backpack, serving as a “skills portfolio.” These digital badges validate completed learning paths or projects, acquired competencies, and serve as a motivation booster during the training process.

Why are digital badges important in Chamilo-based training?

Chamilo LMS allows institutions to build learner profiles that reflect knowledge, skills, and soft skills — visually represented through digital badges. These badges play a crucial role in e-learning by helping learners showcase their achievements and share them on social networks such as LinkedIn or on their personal websites. The goal is to increase engagement and highlight skills gained through formal, non-formal (as defined by UNESCO), or informal learning experiences. Today, many “soft skills” are increasingly valued by recruiters, who are seeking candidates with strong transversal competencies.

[Note] It is possible to develop a structured strategy around badges. Some training institutions can become trusted badge issuers and use paid services to manage them, ensuring consistency (issuance, management, authentication, reporting, portfolio creation, and brand visibility).

You can import badges into the platform or create them directly within Chamilo. You can also edit and customize the badge’s appearance using various graphic elements and templates.

Chamilo tips

This initiative, originally developed by the Mozilla Foundation and now managed by “Badgr,” plays a key role in Chamilo by enabling the export of earned digital badges. It’s essential to define the URL of a “Backpack.” By default, the preconfigured URL allows automatic badge export to Badgr. To specify another Backpack, simply search for the term “Openbadges” in the platform configuration field within the administration panel. It’s that easy!

To edit a skill’s information, go to the “Skills” block in the administration panel and click on “Manage Skills.” You can then edit the fields associated with each competency.
